STUDENT SUPPORT
(Updated April 14, 2023)
ACADEMIC SUPPORT COACHES
Petre College Student Success Coaches work directly with students in one-to-one and small group situations from Grade 9 to Grade 12 in the pursuit of personalization. Student Success Coaches support classroom and subject teachers, help to individualize lessons and assessments to meet the neurodiverse needs of our student population, and connect families with community partners as needed.
STUDENT SUCCESS COUNSELLORS
Senior School Student Success counsellors are in the school every day to support our learners and they are also available for meetings with students both face-to-face and virtually. Students in the Senior School are asked to pre-book their meetings with their counsellors in order to ensure we can adhere to physical distancing protocols. Ms Jessica McDonnell, Student Success Administrative Coordinator, is available to support our families and students.
VIRTUAL LEARNING HUB AND PRIMARY VIRTUAL LEARNING HUB
The PC Virtual Learning Hub was launched in September 2020 to provide all 9-12 students with virtual academic support. This year, we have expanded the hours to Monday through Friday between 4:00pm and 9:00pm and on Saturdays and Sundays between 12:00pm and 5:00pm. This virtual learning space provides our students with access to great educators who provide academic support in math, science, French, English and social sciences. These teachers are experienced educators who are available to provide further instruction and support with homework and assessments. Our Virtual Learning Hub team works as an extension to our daytime program; they truly are partners with our classroom teachers.
MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
Registered Nurse Onsite
Our nurse supports the physical health of students and manages all matters relating to student illness, mitigating risks, and training around infectious diseases, such as COVID-19. The nurse works with the staff to provide a holistic approach to care for our community. Teachers work with our nurse if they see any sign of students presenting with symptoms upon their arrival at school.
Mental Health Support
Over the last year, we have been developing a Mental Health Strategy for PC that has been co-constructed with staff, students and the expertise and guidance of Ms Erika Rukin, social worker. Our students’ mental health is critical to their overall well-being and academic success. We have adopted a three-tiered approach at PC to support our students’ overall well-being and put together a team led by our Dean of Students, Ms Melanie van de Water, and supported by Assistant Division Heads and Ms Tracy Howard. Additionally, at different tiers of support our Student Success Counsellors play a key partnership in working with students, families and community health partners to ensure our students are receiving the care they need to thrive and live a healthy and joyful life.
We are currently hiring a social worker to join our PC staff to be a support, mentor and coach for students and staff.
